The world's top academic countries place a high value on music education. Hungary, Netherlands and Japan stand atop worldwide science achievement and have strong commitment to music education. All three countries have required music training at the elementary and middle school levels, both instrumental and vocal, for several decades. The centrality of music education to learning in the top-ranked countries seems to contradict the United States' focus on math, science, vocabulary, and technology.

College-age musicians are emotionally healthier than their non-musician counterparts. A study conducted at the University of Texas looked at 362 students who were in their first semester of college. They were given three tests, measuring performance anxiety, emotional concerns and alcohol related problems. In addition to having fewer battles with the bottle, researchers also noted that the college-aged music students seemed to have surer footing when facing tests.

Create a Great Practise Routine At Home

Imagine trying to sit down to balance your checkbook while one child is blaring their stereo, the dog is barking, the garbage truck is rattling down the alley and your cell phone begins to ring to "Salsa Groove." How is your concentration level?

When your child sits down to play at home, does an older sibling crank up the volume as his sister begins to play piano? Does a toddler demand attention while you try to sit with your older child? Does the dog try to "sing" along with the piano or guitar?

It's worth taking some time to evaluate distractions noise that may affect your child's ability to concentrate at "practise" times. You may need to change the routine or location so learning can happen effectively.

Here are some ideas:

Arrange for one parent to sit with their child for 15 minutes while the other parent/older sibling entertains a toddler
Dedicate some free space away from computers and tv
Setup regular practise areas with everything you need (books, tuners, sheet music, pencils, etc) to avoid wasting time looking for things
Provide a timer for your child, where they play
Make those 15 minutes noise free/headphone only for the rest of the household in exchange for 15 minutes to crank the tunes after the practise (I suggest using a timer for this one!)
Ask siblings or animals to leave the area if they are distracting
Tell family/friends who call that the child is unavailable--or even dare to turn the ringer off (cell phones too!)

So, take what you like and leave the rest...and good luck balancing your checkbook in those 15 minutes that now have less destructions!

How to Praise your Blossoming Musician

We all need a little encouragement and support from our family as we work through challenging projects. Imagine you just spent the weekend repainting the living room. Which comment from your spouse would be more likely spur you on to tackle the next paint job?

Response A: "Nice job, hon!"

Response B: "Wow, what an improvement! I love how you coordinated the wall and

trim colors. I noticed you've come a long way with your technique... not a single drip!"

Your child will respond best with thoughtful and specific feedback. Take time to listen carefully and find things that you can make positive (but honest) comments on, even if other aspects of playing were weak. This might be YOUR practice time, to master the art of positive reinforcement.

Imagine your child just played "Hokey Pokey" and there was a SERIOUS wrong note--for the 2nd week in a row. You may sigh to yourself, "Can't she hear how out of tune it sounds? We need to fix this before her next lesson or the teacher is going to think we didn't practice at all!" Which response would more likely encourage your child?

Response A: "Meghan, that was good, but there is a wrong note! Don't you remember

working on this in your lesson? Are you focusing?!"

Response B: "I noticed you kept your posture really tall for the whole song. You worked

so hard on that last month with Lightly Row and now you're already doing it on a new

song! I could tell you were thinking you're fingering too. Good for you. Your teacher

wants you to work this week on getting that one note. Let's play a game. You get a point

for every time you play it right, and you can pick out a sticker for every 5 points you get."

Your child loves it when you notice what they do really well during practice. In fact, students will often give you MORE of what you praise in their playing! They are also much more open to working on another aspects of playing after being acknowledged for their efforts.

Is Music Practise Supposed to be Fun??

Ah yes, practice: where fantasy meets reality and parent meets child-- the face-off begins!

Practice doesn't always feel like music making, which is what your kid thought they signed up for when they chose an instrument. When they imagined themselves playing music they probably glossed over the hundreds-of-hours-of-practice part and skipped straight to the beautiful-sounds-and-wildly-enthusiastic-audience part.

As adults it's easy for us to understand that it takes plenty of 'not fun' time to get to a point where you are skillful enough that an activity becomes it's own reward. But kids live in the moment, and the moment needs to be enjoyable for them to want to keep doing it--like working on hard new material when the Wii is calling.

Most of us have our own musical histories, and many of them aren't all that pleasant....sent to a distant room for practice, practise to avoid punishment, or procrastinating to go to bed. I always used practise time to avoid doing dishes! You can help make your child's experience be a very different one. If they struggle to play at home, they may need a cheerleader and motivator to help!

Consider that when your child was learning to read you chose fun books, praised them, marveled at their accomplishments, and undoubtedly followed up with every homework assignment. You saw them through difficult times until they were ready to read on their own for the sheer pleasure of it. You were totally committed. Put learning an instrument into that same category, whether you know music or not--I can help you with ideas and tools. You are not alone!

When is the Best Time to Practise?

I've seen over and over again how much progress kids make when they practice in the morning. Practicing an instrument takes three kinds of energy: physical, mental, and emotional. After a night's rest these resources are at full capacity. However, some kids are grumpy or foggy in the morning. If you're nodding in agreement, you're child is probably one of those!

The most important thing is to find a time of day when your child tends to be at their best, and take advantage of that opportunity. It may be obvious, but -- playing just before bedtime is risky at best. Depleted resources = Frustration= Most Unpleasant Event.

If you notice a certain routine isn't working after a period of time, change it. As children go through different developmental stages, their best time of day may change. Even as an adult I find my routine changes--I can't sleep past 9:00 am anymore! Share what routines work for you!

Teaching Kids the Social Etiquette of Good Listening

Whether you live in a small town or a big city, there's always a concert going on somewhere--especially during the Christmas season. There are church performances, sibling recitals, school concerts, symphony concerts, etc. Kids naturally love music and don't require a virtuoso performance. Still, when a big musical event comes to town and children are involved, it's a wonderful experience.

In Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kamloops there are some great entertainment options for kids and their parents. As you prepare to go to an entertainment venue, you can use it as an opportunity for learning. You can talk about:

"good noise" - clapping and cheering when others are
"bad noise" - talking, coughing...snoring!
etiquette for audience members
how the performers have put hundreds & thousands of hours into preparing to play
when to clap
when to listen
how to listen (ie. listen for different instruments if it is a band, different vocal parts for a choir)

Be Interested in Your Child's Musical Growth

		Most children are delighted to be the centre of their parent’s attention, and will tend to view favorably any activity that thrusts them into the limelight like that...

The single best thing parents can do to help their child practice is to be genuinely interested in what’s going on with their music lessons. To be hungry to find out what happened in the last lesson, and how their child plans on being ready for the next one. To want to know how the flute fits together, or how to apply resin to the bow, or which hand pushes those buttons on the trumpet. And what that left pedal on the piano is called. What’s the highest note their child can play? How fast is that new study supposed to be? What are they most looking forward to showing off at your next lesson?

How is their child feeling about their next concert? What made them decide to choose to play this piece? Which scale do they hate the most and why? Which composer do they enjoy playing most? What do they mess up most often in lessons?

Such questions can happen in the car, at the dinner table, straight after lessons, while they’re getting their kid dressed for school, at the checkout at the supermarket…wherever. But they should happen a lot. Parents who ask questions like this won’t have to feign fascination—they’ll end up with greater insights into what their child is doing, and in turn be more interested as to how things are progressing.

If music lessons can feature on that list of positive attention-getters, then a large part of the practice battle has been won already.

Parents don't need to be gushing over every correct quarter note, but calculated positive feedback from parents is a great way of reinforcing positive behavior.

The logic is that if the parent catches their child doing something right, and then praises them for it, the child is likely to want to repeat that behavior in the future.

This can be even more effective if the parent is well-versed in which issues the teacher is trying to develop, allowing for selective targeting of such praise. So if the problem for the past few months has been that the student practices too fast, the next time you hear a passage of slow practice, however fleeting, you should pop in and mention to the student how careful their practice is sounding.

Parents can also keep an ear out for when the student may be sounding frustrated with what they are doing, not so you can sweep in and fix the problem, but just so the child knows that there is someone in their corner. Depending on the situation, you can gently encourage the child to try the section a couple more times, or try it a different way, or try a different section altogether, or even to take a break for a while and come back later.

The point is that when the child battles with practicing demons, they do so with support, and with plenty of encouragement to persist. This will help continue to foster the child's positive relationship with music and the people who support them in it!

Reflection as a review tool for music students

Reflect - Have your child reflect back to you their weekly assignments and tasks3.

...the student should be able to explain exactly what their tasks are, together with the practice techniques that were recommended to complete them.

At the heart of successful practice is the need for students to understand exactly what they are trying to achieve in the week ahead—well before they start the first practice session. This means that instructions from the teacher, and feedback during the lesson are more important than ever. Parents can ensure that the communication between studio and home is complete by having the student reflect back to them the essential information for the week ahead.

The student should be able to explain exactly what their tasks are, together with the practice techniques that were recommended to complete them. They should also be able to answer questions about key points that were raised last lesson, together with any details of upcoming deadlines or performances.

The questions from the parent are designed to help the student cement their understanding of what’s required, and are probably best conducted as soon after the lesson as possible (in the car on the way home is ideal!). It’s also useful to pop into practice sessions at random and have the student outline again what their goals for the week are…that way, if the practicing has been wandering from the task at hand, the student will be gently reminded to get their eye back on the ball, without anyone having to ask.

Show Your Enthusiasm!

		*...and the best thing about these various moments of enthusing? They don’t have to be done to the student. They just need to be said within earshot* of the student**

While praise can be useful for reinforcing what a student is already doing, being enthusiastic can help motivate students to be excited about things they haven’t even started yet—affecting practice sessions that may not take place for months, or even years.

So for example, if you find that you and your child are listening to a pretty piano part or crazy guitar part on the radio in the car, you could turn to your child and say:

"You know what? I love listening to this piece, but if things keep going the way they have been, by the time you finish high school, you’ll probably be able to play it! Not very many people who start music lessons are strong enough to put the the work into it, but when I tell you I'm proud of what you did in your lesson today, I'm not kidding!"

It can be over the top, but it’s entirely appropriate, because coming from mom or dad, words like that can ring in the child’s ears long after the conversation ends. Show your enthusiasm about the new piece your kid has been given. Or enthuse about the fact that their child has almost finished their new book, and may even get through it all before the holidays. Get pumped about the new instrument their child now has. Show them your excited to hear them play at the upcoming recital! Then after the recital you can be enthusiastic about how much everyone applauded at the student concert or how their child was one of the few to play from memory.

And the best thing about these various moments of enthusing? They don’t have to be done to the student. Your enthusiasm needs only to be within earshot of the student. (In fact, such enthusing will have its greatest credibility and impact if the child believes they were not supposed to hear what was said :0) ).

So if the parent’s little aside was about how little Matthew is playing so well that it won’t be long before he is playing some Beethoven or Oscar Peterson, don’t be surprised if little Matthew requests some Beethoven in a future lesson.

Why? Because being able to play Beethoven or Oscar Peterson is obviously a yardstick for being musically grown up—they know, because they heard their parent say so once. As a mere music teacher, nothing I can say will count as much as that!

The Salmon Arm Fall Fair is arriving this weekend, Sep 11-13th. Roxy will be facepainting and entertaining in a new disguise--keep your eyes out in the parade and fairgrounds for a character that scares away the birds...but hopefully not the children! You can also see her playing piano with Sasha Lewis at 6:00 on Friday evening, kicking off the Shuswap Idols competition.

I was thrilled to attend Salmon Arm Roots & Blues and Robson Valley Music Festivals this summer, as Firzle the clown. It is definitely a scene I could get used to!

Roxy has accepted a part-time Music Therapy position at the NONA Child Development Centre in Vernon. There she will be working with a multi-disciplinary team to offer music therapy as an early intervention strategy.
